(Even If You Don’t See It on Your Desktop)
Plugged in your flash drive but can’t find it anywhere on your Mac? Don’t worry — we’ll walk you through how to locate it step by step, even if it’s not showing up right away.
Step-by-Step: How to Find Your Flash Drive on a MacBook
Step 1: Plug It In
Insert your flash drive (or Clickfree device) into one of your Mac’s USB ports.
If your Mac only has USB-C ports, you may need a USB-C to USB adapter.
Step 2: Check Your Desktop
By default, your Mac might show connected drives right on your desktop (like little icons).
Look for something with a name like:
“Untitled”
“USB Drive”
“Clickfree Pro”
Don’t see anything? That’s okay — it might be hidden. Move to Step 3.
Step 3: Make Sure External Drives Are Set to Show
Click anywhere on your desktop to bring up the Finder menu
At the top of your screen, click Finder > Settings (or Finder > Preferences on older macOS versions)
In the General tab, check the box next to:
“External disks” under “Show these items on the desktop”
Once you check that box, your flash drive should appear on your desktop if it’s plugged in properly.
Step 4: Check the Finder Sidebar
Still not seeing it on your desktop? Try looking in the Finder sidebar:
Open a new Finder window
Look on the left-hand side under Locations or Devices
You should see your flash drive listed there
Just click the name to open it and view your files.
Step 5: Use Disk Utility (if still missing)
If it’s still not showing up, it’s possible your Mac recognizes the device — but it’s not mounting it correctly.
To check:
Open Applications > Utilities
Open Disk Utility
Look for your flash drive in the list on the left
If you see it but it’s greyed out, click it and then choose Mount at the top.
Extra Tip: Use “System Information” to Confirm Detection
If you want to check whether your Mac sees the device at all:
Go to Applications > Utilities
Open System Information
In the left sidebar, choose USB
Look for your flash drive listed there
If it appears here but not in Finder, your Mac detects it, but it may need to be reformatted or remounted.
Still Not Working?
Try unplugging and plugging it back in, restarting your Mac, or trying a different port. If you’re using a USB hub or adapter, make sure it’s working properly.
